For leisurely travellers
Ronda is one of the most beautiful places in Spain. Perched high above the El Tajo gorge, the historic town offers the most spectacular views and is home to one of the most iconic bridges in the country – the Puente Nuevo. Take a stroll along the cobbled streets, visit the oldest bullring in Spain, and enjoy delicious tapas and wine in the evening. Situated in the highlands, Ronda is a refreshing escape from the coastal heat, and there are several motorhome-friendly spots nearby that make staying simple and stress-free.
For travelling foodies
San Sebastián, or Donostia in Basque, combines seaside beauty with laid-back city life. If you love good food and soaking up the sun (who doesn’t?) this is the place for you. Famous for its crescent-shaped La Concha beach, San Sebastián has plenty to do; explore the streets of the elegant old town, sample pintxos at the local bars, or simply enjoy the view from the city’s hillside parks. With nearby campsites and good transport links, it’s easy to visit by day and return to your motorhome for a peaceful night by the sea.
For outdoor explorers
Picos de Europa National Park is in the Picos de Europa mountain range in northern Spain. Set across over 600km² of wild mountainous landscape, it feels more like the Alps than the Iberian Peninsula, ideal for those who love to immerse themselves in untouched nature.
If hiking is your thing, you can take on the Cares Gorge trail, a dramatic cliffside route carved between towering canyon walls, or if you prefer a gentler journey, you can take the Fuente Dé cable car up to 1,800 metres for sweeping views over the valley below.
The region is also home to remote stone villages like Bulnes, only accessible by foot or funicular. Keep an eye out for the impressive griffon vultures overhead, or you may even spot a brown bear or Iberian wolf – hopefully from a distance! There are plenty of scenic campsites and motorhome pitches around the park, especially near Arenas de Cabrales, a popular base for outdoor adventures.
For coastal wanderers
Tucked away on the rugged Cap de Creus peninsula, Cadaqués is full of charm and character. Its whitewashed buildings, winding alleys, and deep blue sea have inspired artists for decades – most famously Salvador Dalí, whose former home in nearby Portlligat is now a quirky museum open to visitors.
Stroll along the waterfront promenade, explore hidden coves, or take a walk in the surrounding Cap de Creus Natural Park for spectacular sea views and lunar-like rock formations. Motorhomes are welcome just outside the village, with several stopover areas offering easy access to this peaceful corner of the Costa Brava.
For culture seekers
Zamora is one of Spain’s lesser-known historic cities. Sitting quietly along the River Duero, it’s packed with Romanesque churches, medieval walls, and narrow lanes that lead you through centuries of history. Take a trip to the Zamora Cathedral, known for its distinctive Byzantine dome, or enjoy a sunset walk along the Castle viewpoint, where you’ll get a great view of the river.
If you’re looking for a more peaceful stop on your motorhome travels, this is definitely a place to consider. The city has a relaxed pace, free from crowds, and there are quiet motorhome parking areas along the riverbank – perfect for soaking up the atmosphere at your own rhythm.
For keen adventurers
Keen for somewhere with a bit more to do? Lake Banyoles is a lovely spot. As the largest natural lake in Catalonia, there’s no shortage of watersports to get involved with. You can swim, kayak and paddleboard on the water, or even go for a cycle around the edge of the lake.
If you’re travelling with the family, the endless activities will certainly keep the kids occupied, but there’s lots of places to relax and unwind. Enjoy a picnic by the lake, or venture to the nearby town of Banyoles and peruse the local cafés, bakeries and shops. There are dedicated campervan and motorhome areas just a short stroll from the lakeshore, making it easy to settle in and unwind.
If you already own a motorhome – great! You can plan your route, get the van serviced, and hit the road. But if travelling abroad by motorhome is new to you, you might be wondering what kind of vehicle is right for your trip.
Amongst other things, it depends on your budget and who you’ll be travelling with. Are you after something compact and easy to drive? Or would you prefer a larger, fully equipped model so you can settle in comfortably wherever you stop? Thinking about how you want to tour – and what kind of experience you’re after – is a great place to start.
Once you’ve got a few ideas in mind, come and visit us at Erwin Hymer Centre Travelworld. Our team will help you find the perfect motorhome for your Spanish adventure!
