Money Saving Tips for Motorhome Tours

It’s a mistake to assume though that just having a motorhome will automatically make you savings, as you will still have to be proactive and seek out the best prices when travelling, especially when taking your motorhome overseas. Here are some key things to consider which could save money while travelling.

One of the main reasons why people buy a motorhome in the first place, apart from the flexibility, is to save money on your holidays and weekends away. It’s a mistake to assume though that just having a motorhome will automatically make you savings, as you will still have to be proactive and seek out the best prices when travelling, especially when taking your motorhome overseas. Here are some key things to consider which could save money while travelling.

Ferries and Eurostar

One of the major costs of travelling with your motorhome is the cost of crossing water, whether on the Channel Tunnel trains or by ferry. The key to making sure you get the best price is by shopping around; look at different times of day, leaving and returning using different ports, buying two single tickets instead of a return, and always try to avoid peak times such as school holidays. Check out the special tickets and promotions which ferry companies and the Channel Tunnel offer from time to time – make sure you are signed up for marketing emails to be the first to know about the new deals when they are released as they are often limited in availability.

Shop Around for Supplies

Campsites sometimes have a small on-site shop, but shopping here is always going to cost a lot more than the local supermarket. Having a motorhome gives you the flexibility to be able to stop at the supermarket on the way back from a day out. Plan your shopping ahead of time to avoid the need for panic purchases, and if venturing overseas, remember that shopping for supplies in the local market is always going to be cheaper than in the shops, and a lot more fun too. Eating in or having picnics is also much cheaper than eating out at restaurants or having takeaway every night.

Avoid the Toll Roads

Although there is only one stretch of toll motorway in the UK, the concept of toll roads is much more common on the Continent, especially in France and Spain. If you’re in a desperate hurry to get to the French Riviera then toll roads might be the way to go, but if you are in less of a rush, use the A-road network instead and save some money. Using the non-toll roads will also take you through some unspoiled countryside, towns and villages which you would not have discovered otherwise.

Think About Your Miles Per Gallon

Fuel is another expensive component of any motorhome holiday, and the more miles you can get for every litre or gallon of fuel, the cheaper your holiday. Keep packing to a minimum, don’t pack a lot more than you’ll need as you’ll just weigh the motorhome down and spend more on fuel. Work out which speed you should drive at to achieve the best fuel economy, and rather than drive the motorhome when leaving the campsite to go into the nearest village or to the beach, walk or pack a couple of lightweight cycles.
