Checking your motorhome coolant system is a vital part of your RV health care check list. Regular upkeep of your coolant system is a sure-fire way of keeping problems at bay. Having your coolant system drained and flushed on an annual basis will ensure any burgeoning problems are addressed sooner rather than later. For extra peace of mind there are some straightforward things you can do:
Things to look out for
If you suspect a loss of fluid then firstly check the expansion tank to see if there are any leaks there. If you do this on a regular basis you will be able to spot any differences in fluid levels. Make certain you have the correct combination of water and antifreeze amounts
Hoses connected to the coolant can have holes and splits. Check these by moving the hoses and stretching them to thoroughly inspect
Look out for any signs of a leak near the radiator. Problems are often presented as stains which have been caused due to spillage. Detaching panels will allow for more visibility and inspection. Check the front of the grille as well
Aluminium within your coolant system can sometimes corrode. Make sure you regularly check the antifreeze levels in your system to avoid this
The drive belt connected to the coolant pump could be damaged if you are hearing whistling sounds from the engine while on the move
If water appears rust in colour then it is likely you do not have any or enough antifreeze in it
White gunky fluid could mean a problem with your head gasket; a potentially costly repair job
If your temperature gauge is on red when your RV is at a standstill then your cooling system is probably not working well
If your demister is not working efficiently this could spell a leakage problem
Look at the quality of your seals around the pump. If they are worn or perished they can cause leaks
Viscous fans should move freely when the engine is turned off and become more taut when warmed up. If this is not happening then this could indicate a problem

Always ensure the engine is cooled sufficiently before taking off the filler cap and for any inspection on your coolant system
Carry coolant fluid with you on all journeys. Warm climates and steep inclines often encountered by motorhomes, put strain and warmth on your engine
If in doubt take your motorhome to a motorhome service specialist who will be able to pressurise the system highlighting all leaks.
