St Patrick’s Celebrations In Ireland
St Patrick’s Day began life as a religious feast and has now grown into a highly anticipated international festival. There are around 50 – 100 parades in total and it is believed that on St Patrick’s day the number of Guinness pints consumed rises to 13 million a day.
The US is also well known for its St Patrick’s Day parade where it has been held since 1947. However, Dublin is perhaps the place best known for its St Patrick’s Day celebrations and in particular, the city parade in the centre which attracts a huge number of visitors ( around half a million), from young to old, all donning green garments, shamrocks, face paints and fancy dress.
There is a four day run up to the event, allowing plenty of party time for the real St Patrick’s Day enthusiasts. As well as the Dublin Parade, there are many other large parades that happen in Southern Ireland.
The Dingle Parade begins at 6 am and is the first one to begin. The oldest Parade is in Country Wexford and Cork has a food and drinks craft market as well as music and street performers. Country Armargh has strong links with St Patrick and dedicated a week-long festival to the saint.
