Things to do in Perthshire

Nature lovers can do a lot worse than take a visit to Perthshire. Centrally, the county is home to ‘Big Tree Country’; a dense area of forest and mountain terrain that provides a perfect habitat for some of the most interesting wildlife in the UK. Visit Ben Lawers, a Munro close to Killin, overlooking Loch Tay; this is one of Britain’s best locations for seeing scarce artic-alpine plants. The area is also home to the ptarmigan, a plump game bird famous for its winter white plumage.

Woodlands in Perthshire are famous for the large trees. Visit Blair Atholl, Killiecrankie and Dunkeld, which has a visitor centre that looks out on a regular breeding site of osprey or the famous Black Wood of Rannoch which is a significant remnant of the ancient Caledonian forest, and home to pine martens, rare capercaillies and red squirrels.

Pitlochry Dam has a renowned fish ladder where visitors can observe the travelling wild salmon. Around 5,000 salmon pass through here each summer and the dam has a purpose built viewing chamber for visitors to watch the salmon as they make their dash further upstream. Further downstream, the opportunity to see Europe’s largest reed beds opens up to visitors. Loch Leven is a great place to visit to watch wintering geese make their daily flights and the pink footed geese numbers peak in November. The loch also has a purpose built observation room, three hides and a nature trail, where if visitors are lucky, they can also observe ducks, redshank, lapwings, whooper swans and great spotted woodpeckers.

Perthshire’s rich history of Jacobite uprisings, captive queens and the legendary Stone of Destiny provide a wide selection of historic places of interest to visit on your trip to this renowned county. Visit the Pass of Killiecrankie, where the first of three Jacobite uprisings took place and where is also home to Soldiers Leap, where stories are told of an English soldier who is said to have escaped Highland rebels by leaping across the gorge.

Travel to Blair Castle, where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed in 1745 and check out the priceless antiques on site. Perthshire is the original home of the Stone of Destiny and at Scone Palace where Robert the Bruce was crowned King of Scotland. Nearby is Castle Island on Loch Leven where the ruined tower house is situated. The tower house was the place where Mary, Queen of Scots was incarcerated in 1567. Take time to visit Balhousie Castle where you can surround yourself in the 300-year rich history of one of the most famous military regiments, the Black Watch.

Historians have lovingly recreated an Iron-Age dwelling at Loch Tay. This place of interest has been reconstructed using the same methods that would have been employed over 2,500 years ago and is well worth a visit.

In addition to all the natural and historic sites, Perthshire has an amazing number of cultural buildings for all the family to enjoy. The Perth Museum and Art Gallery houses everything from works by the Old Masters to Pictish stones. The Fergusson Gallery, a beautifully converted waterworks, displays works by John Duncan Fergusson and for younger visitors, the Beatrix Potter Exhibition in Birnam, Dunkeld is a timeless delight. If you are looking for a spectacular performance for an evening’s amusement, the Perth Concert Hall and Pitlochry Festival Theatre are both excellent venues and bring the best in entertainment throughout the year.
