Erwin Hymer Of Hymer Motorhomes Dies Aged 82

The legacy

Founder of one of the most prolific and recognisable motorhome brands, Erwin Hymer, has passed away at the age of 82.

The legacy left by the entrepreneur is that of a multi-brand organisation responsible for some of the most significant developments in motorhome and caravan manufacturing. Niesmann + Bischoff, Eriba and Movera are just some of the companies operating under the Erwin HYMER Group.

Born in Bad Waldsee, in 1938, the career of Erwin Hymer will be looked back on as one that was sparked by an ethic of hard work and a passion for engineering. Beginning his career as a toolmaker he later studied engineering at university before beginning work on small automobiles and post-war aeroplanes.

It was in 1957 that Hymer created his first production of caravans and his success in this area continued to flourish. He remained steadfast in his desire to develop motorhomes and in 1971 Hymer drew on his knowledge working with cars and aircraft to begin production of an integrated motorhome.

Having relaxed his involvement in the company he took the position as Chairman in the now listed company. Hymer AG has seen expansion of mammoth proportions in recent decades making ‘Hymer’ the household name it is today.

Erwin Hymer has been recognised officially for his business triumphs and received many accolades including Enterprise Medal of the state of Baden Wurttemberg (1991).

Not just a businessman but also husband to Greda and father to Carolin and Christian, the renowned businessman was well known for being able to relate to people on all levels and could regularly be seen chatting to the staff that worked in the Hymer building.

Erwin Hymer’s passion for designing and engineering motorhomes and caravans is clear when you look back at his life. He undoubtedly formed part of engineering history and for those who are intrigued by the work of this inimitable man there is the Erwin-Hymer Museum opposite the Hymer AG Headquarters.
