10 Things You Can Do To Get Your Motorhome Winter Ready

Getting your motorhome winter ready is something that needs to be done every year. The colder months can play havoc with all parts of your vehicle so it is vital you take a few simple steps to stop the cold spell from making a dent in your motorhome holiday plans.

We’ve outlined a few basics below to help you prevent problems that could cost you:

  1. Externally, give your motorhome a good wash then wax over it to provide a protective outer layer from any winter debris. This is worthwhile doing even if you are storing your vehicle inside a garage
  2. Drain all the water from fresh water and waste tanks. Allow air into the pipes by opening the taps in the kitchen and bathroom; blow compressed air into taps which rid them of any residual water still left inside
  3. Wash the toilet cassette out thoroughly once you know you will not be using your motorhome again for a few months. Don’t forget to do the same with the separate rinse water tank if you have one
  4. Check around all areas for water damp or ingress including roof lockers and cupboards. A hydrometer can be worth the investment if you want to do a really thorough job. Get jobs fixed as soon as possible as water damage that lingers usually spells more long term problems
  5. Look to see if any of the rubber seals on your doors or windows need replacing. Over time, the rubber can perish and be rendered useless
  6. Stop mice making a winter retreat inside your motorhome by removing all food and crumbs left behind from your holiday excursions
  7. Make sure your awning is fully dry before you roll it up and put it away for winter
  8. Take out all the batteries you have in your devices inside your vehicle e.g. alarm clocks and smoke detectors
  9. Every few weeks or so over winter go and do a check of your motorhome. Check your tyre pressures as well as brake and clutch fluid. If possible take it out for a ride to warm the engine up, this will also stop it from being sat on the same part of the tyres for an extended period of time
  10. To get your motorhome winter ready, make sure you cover all vents up with polythene and tape them up so they are secure from weather impact and insects
